Hill Names: Twilight Zone

Obviously the black diamond mogul run on the front of Nub's Nob is named for the old TV show. What a lot of people don't know is management didn't name it. Years ago there was a space between Chute and the trees that didn't get groomed. As snow built up, it would become slanted and had a shadowy feel. Skiers (mostly kids) would go there looking for fresh snow and the moguls built up over each winter. The kids named it Twilight Zone. After a few years, the suggestion was made to turn it into an official hill. The space was widened and signs were made. Now it stands as a Northern Michigan right of passage.

  1. Back in the '70's, before Twilight Zone was named and widened, both Chute and Scarface were riddled with Moguls. Grooming (what existed) was mostly done only on the blues and greens...therefore it was just considered part of Chute. It did however, have an interesting Fall Line! Also, we did have a 'pet name' for it.....like we did for ChuteFace....anyone remember?

I still remember how proud I was when my 6 year old son, Blay, skiied it like a pro! My knees were already too old.....

  2. While we are on the subject of Hill names.....there were 3 runs (all black diamonds) that were now where Smooth Sailing and Birch Run are located. I remember the names of all three....do you?

Bonus question: The run that used to be between Dories Bowl and Easy Mile? hint: it was a blue...
